An incoming call from the firm lit up his phone. He hit the button for his hands-free calling on his dashboard and kept his eyes on the road. “Hello?”

“Hello, Mr. Thornton-Webb.” The voice hesitated. “Are you driving? I can call back if you’re busy.”

“Adler, call me Wes. I can talk.” He’d told all the new paralegals to call him by his first name. And since Adler’s was the only voice he didn’t recognize, he took a shot at it.

“Right, thanks. Mr. uh . . . Wes.”

“Everything okay?”

“Uh, yeah. I was wondering if you could come in and sign some papers for me.”

Wes rocked his head backward, eyes still on the road. “I’m a little busy. What’s so important that it can’t wait ‘til tomorrow?”

There was a scuffling of papers and maybe a hand over a phone, a voice he could almost make out in the background—no, two: one female and one male. “Adler, everything okay?”

“Uh, yup. It’s for the Donovan case.”

“Right, well, that can wait for tomorrow.” He expected he’d need to work through them, but they weren’t time sensitive at all. And Alder was acting like the sky was falling down.

More background noises. He could hear voices whispering, a female and male.

“Are you sure?” Alder’s voice shook.

“If there haven’t been any changes, then yes, I’m sure.” He was also sure that Gabriela and Drew were standing next to the paralegal. Wes choked back a smile. They’d hit the mute button—this time.

Adler clicked back on. “Sorry about that, sir.”

“It’s Wes, and you don’t have to let them push you around to do their busybody work for them.”

“Excuse me, sir, I mean Wes.”

“Right. Can I talk to Gabriela?”

“Uh, I’ll see if I can find her.”

“I’ll tell you what, if you pass the phone to her in five seconds, I’ll give you a hundred dollars.”

Thud. “Uff. He said ‘pass,’ not ‘punch.’ Shit, Adler. Hello, Mr. Clayton Weston Thornton-Webb, how mad are you?”

“Not mad, but you need to not terrorize the new kid. What exactly are you trying to find out?”

“Right.” Gabriela, the woman of many words, seemed to have lost most of them.

“Are you on a date?” Drew asked.

“No, just helping a friend.”

“Like a girlfriend?”

“Henry and Max.” Wes let out a breath. The two of them would be thrilled if they knew the truth. “You know, I’m glad you called. I’ll be back on Monday. Can you clear my schedule for tomorrow?” He never took a day off. Even leaving on a Thursday afternoon at three wasn’t normal for him. Hence the firm’s admins calling to quench their ever-loving quest for office gossip. It was a price they paid for having the two most organized and thorough people running the front show. Also, he considered them friends. No way would they be messing around in a partner’s life the same way.

“Right. I’ll email you any notes about the changes.” Drew paused. “Have a good weekend, Wes.”

No way in the world did they think he wasn’t going on a date now, and he didn’t care.
